Find a local builder should be like booking a holiday

You’re about to book a holiday, it may be a family break or a cheeky weekend away with the girls. Do you book a cheap holiday or treat yourself and go, first-class, all the way?  Although you wouldn’t think it, booking a holiday or a trip away with the lads involves the same principles as having work carried out in your home or business.

How?

Well, sit back, grab a glass of wine and lets plan your next trip (project) in advance so you can enjoy it rather than have a “Holiday Nightmare”

CHOOSING A TRAVEL AGENT (builder)

Do you travel with a big brand company or smaller independent holiday Broker?  Making that choice will include a lot of research, trips to various shops, looking at packages and the type of service they can provide.  Choosing a contractor for a project is no different – explore the options and consider what is important to you when you would book that holiday.  Are you going to get value for your money? Are they insured if something happens? Do you need to take out insurance? Have they got good reviews and customer service history?

CHOOSING A PLACE TO GO (Researching a tradesperson)

You may have settled on a travel agent, or you may still need a bit more time to decide who you’ll go with while you decide on where to go.  You’ll spend hours clawing through catalogues, looking at hotels, pictures of rooms and asking about what other services you can take advantage of as part of your booking.  Do the same with the contractor for your project.  Not all companies are the same and can offer the same level or particular types of services you may be looking for.  Explore their web sites and social media to see the types of work completed make sure they live up to your expectations for the money you’re happy to spend.

WHAT’S THE PERFECT HOLIDAY (project) WORTH TO YOU?

You’ve chosen the location, know the room you’re going to have and the services you’re going to receive. The question is, what is the cost going to be and is there going to be a considerable difference between the big brand company and the smaller independent holiday Broker? One may have a promotion on, and the other may seem to be expensive, but is cheap the best option or does higher price mean they’re trying to take advantage of you? There are several reasons why costs can differ from company to company. One might be a large company with lots of overheads to cover, and the other may be a smaller company that doesn’t do as much work, so it is not VAT registered.
It is not always about cost, we all know we can buy the same can of beans at different supermarkets, but we choose to buy them at a particular store because we are happy with the shop, it’s service and the way the store presents itself. It’s about being comfortable with your decision and who you’re going to pay.

How do you pay your builder for work in your home?

HOW DO YOU PAY FOR YOUR HOLIDAY (project)?

Part and parcel of booking a holiday and choosing who to go with can come down to how you’re going to be able to pay for it.  You might have saved for a long time to take this break or your going to book it on a credit card or with a loan from the bank.  In some cases, you might have to pay for certain parts of the holiday upfront (like flights and hotel) and other services you can pay for when you’re there.  Whichever way you book your holiday you will have considered or already have taken out some holiday insurance.  When considering payments for a project in your home we always advise people to schedule payments throughout the work.  We carry out all our work with contracts that state the payment amounts and dates that there due.  You may not be able to take out insurance for the work you have done, but you can have the insurance of a retainer on the project.  Holding back a percentage of the overall cost allows you to make sure all the work is completed and anything that needs attending to is carried out before that final payment.

SHOW OFF TO YOUR FRIENDS (SEND A POST CARD)

The holiday is all booked and paid for, and you’re sitting on the beach or by the pool at the five-star hotel, what’s the first thing you do? Post that famous photo of your feet on a lounger in front of the pool or the sea with a message to everyone back home saying how good it is where you are. When you’re there you might even post or send the odd photo to people about how the holidays going.
Think about it, yes we all like to brag we’re on holiday, but we wouldn’t be doing it if we weren’t enjoying ourselves or had a good time. If you put all the wheels in motion and take the necessary precautions, you will have a stress free, peaceful and relaxing time while your work is carried out and you’ll be able to say –
“That was money well spent” when talking to everyone about your experience on that trip as a tourist in your own home.
